FENNER, MADISON COUNTY -- Madison County Sheriff's Deputies are investigating a report of shots fired that lead to the SWAT team being called in.
It happened around 4:40 Monday afternoon in the area of Nichols Pond Park in Fenner, Madison County.
The deputies were looking for a man believed to be somewhere in the park. A vehicle believed to belong to the man was found, according to deputies.
Investigators then reported hearing gunshots.
State Police and Canastota Police, along with the Sheriff's Special Operations Unit equipped with night vision, responded to the scene. A command post was also set up at Nichols Pond Park.
A State Police helicopter was called in to provide aerial lighting.
The man was found on the perimeter of the park around 7:30 p.m.
Deputies reported the man, believed to be in his 50s, may have been suicidal. His name has not been released as the investigation is on-going.
The man's body was transported to the Onondaga County Medical Examiner's Office in Syracuse.
The Madison County District Attorney's office also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation.
