MANLIUS -- Tuesday night, the Manlius town board unanimously voted to override the state's new property tax cap, which limits tax increases to 2%.
The Manlius Town Supervisor Edmond Theobald says this was the right thing to do to avoid potential penalties down the road. Paying off the debt on the new firehouse in Fayetteville has forced the town's tax levy to go up more than 4%. But Theobald says not everyone in the town will be paying a lot more in taxes. He says it depends on where you live.
The town is split up into numerous districts. If you live in the Fayetteville Fire District you will see the biggest increase. The fire district tax rate is going up about 50%, an extra $90 if your house is assessed at $100,000.
Theobald says the hike is to pay for the new firehouse, which taxpayers approved in a referendum vote.
"It's only the people who live in that particular fire protection district that will see an increase in their rate," said Supervisor Theobald.
People who live in the Manlius Fire District will also being paying a bit more for their fire service in next year's budget. The supervisor says the rate is going up about 1%.
Everyone in the town will pay 1.85% more for their town taxes. Tax bills are mailed out in December.
