Over 150 tow trucks gathered in Mattydale Saturday morning, in tribute to one of their collegues, killed while on the job.
And they're hearing that NY is extending more protection to them.
Todd Young, who owned Northern Lights Auto Service, was at a call on the Thruway last Sunday, when he was sideswiped and killed by a passing tractor trailer. This morning, over 150 tow trucks gathered --their operators attending the funeral service for Young, and then doing a procession to White Chapel Memory Gardens , near Shoppingtown. Many of the trucks, from companies all over the area, carried memorial stickers for Young.
And, there's word that tow truck operators will soon be included in the 'Move Over' law that protects law enforcers from passing motorists.
The law, in effect since the New Year, requires motorists to give wide berth to stopped emergency vehicles. It was passed after Onondaga County Sheriff's Deputy Glen Searles was killed on 481 while helping a disabled vehicle. As of this New Year (2012) it will be extended to cover any hazard vehicle displaying amber lights, including tow trucks.
