SYRACUSE -- A service was held at LeMoyne College's Panasci Chapel Thursday to commemorate World AIDS Day.

The purpose of the event was to remember those who were lost, while raising awareness about HIV and AIDS.

Michael Crinnin, Executive Director of AIDS Community Resources in Syracuse, says it's important to teach people about HIV prevention, especially young people.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says teens and young adults between the ages of 13 and 29 accounted for 39% of new HIV infections in 2009. That group had the largest share of any age group.

Nationally, HIV is the 6th leading cause of death for people ages 25-44.

At Thursday's service, a gong sounded every two minutes because every two minutes, 10 people worldwide become infected with HIV.

People who attended the service also sang songs and listened to readings, while reflecting on those who died from AIDS .

Do you think more needs to be done to support the fight against HIV and AIDS? Are you doing anything to commemorate World AIDS Day? Post your comments below.
