November 2011 and 2010 were similar in the amount of snowfall our area received. The last 2 Novembers had less than 1” of snow for Syracuse. However, when you compare this week in December to last year, those comparisons turn to outright major differences!

The 4 day period of December 5th through December 8th was a record setter. We had 3 daily snowfall records set during this time period. In addition, it was the 4th snowiest four day period ever on record. The only 3 periods that were higher can from just 2 events: The Blizzards of 1966 and 1993. Another amazing stat from this event: It snowed every minute at Syracuse Hancock Airport from 6:16am Saturday December 4th, 2010 through 8:10am Wednesday December 8th, 2010! That was a 97 hour and 54 minute stretch of non-stop snow. If you want to read the full story on this event, click here.

As we all know, so far this month, we have no accumulating snow through December 6th. While a southern storm will be close to our area Wednesday night and Thursday morning, it appears that the system will probably miss us. Therefore, very little, if any accumulating snow worse than a trace or coating is expected through December 8th 2011.

So far this month, Syracuse has been 6.4° above normal. This is coming off the 3rd warmest November on record with temperatures 6.2° above normal for that month. Readings will be closer to normal, though for the next 7 days.
