A former Syracuse nun is one step closer to sainthood.

Today the Vatican confirmed a second miracle attributed to Blessed Mother Marianne Cope. Members of the Congregation for the Causes for the Saints ruled an inexplicable medical recovery was due to Cope's work.

The determination is a major step towards Cope's canonization. The final step is approval by the Pope.

Cope started her religious life in 1862 in Syracuse. She helped establish St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse and St. Elizabeth Hospital in Utica. She later traveled to Hawaii to work with patients suffering from leprosy.
