SYRACUSE -- The new SRC Arena at Onondaga Community College is officially open.

A special ribbon cutting ceremony was held Tuesday afternoon at the new facility. The arena includes 60,000 square feet of exhibit space, with seating for up to 6,500 people. Athletes will be able to take advantage of three interior courts that can be used for basketball, tennis, or volleyball games, as well as a 200 meter track, and locker rooms. All students will have access to the 5,000 square foot fitness center managed by the YMCA.

In addition to athletic facilities, the arena includes multi-purpose rooms for classes, meetings, and community use.

The first event at the new arena will be a concert this Saturday. It's called An Evening with Branford Marsalis. Other events include a birthday bash for television character Barney, and a concert from the Empire Brass Quartet.

There have been some concerns the SRC Arena will take business away from the struggling Convention Center in Downtown Syracuse. OCC President Debbie Sidow says the facility will focus more on high school sports than events that would normally be at the Convention Center.
