SYRACUSE (AP) -- Crews have nearly completed a 1½-mile-long barrier wall constructed as part of the ongoing project to clean up a heavily polluted lake in Central New York.
Officials with Honeywell International tell the Post-Standard of Syracuse that the steel barrier wall along Onondaga Lake is expected to be completed Thursday. Construction of the wall on the lake's southwest shore began in 2006.
The wall is comprised of more than 1,600 5-foot-wide steel panels between 35 and 77 feet long that have been driven into the shoreline between the lake and the former Allied Chemical property. The wall is designed to stop contaminated groundwater from flowing into the lake.
Honeywell, the successor to Allied Chemical, has agreed to spend $550 million to clean up the lake bottom and its tributaries.
