SYRACUSE -- Up until a few days ago, most people would have been more likely to take a few laps around the track in running shoes than put on skates and try the ice rink. Cold weather finally moved in and Friday night was a beautiful night to lace up the skates and get into the holiday spirit at the Clinton Square ice rink in downtown Syracuse.
"I think it's just nice with the Christmas tree and all the lights and people just get the chance to come out and have fun with who their with," said Samantha Marks as she celebrated her birthday at the rink.
The mild weather has kept snow off the ground but made things tough for the Clinton Square ice rink staff. The rink does about sixty percent of it's business around Christmas break and the staff are happy to have some solid ice built up.
"The warm weather, especially with the rain was a little bit of a problem. If it's warm and not rainy, we don't puddle up. Ice might get a little softer but we really don't lose it - but with water on top it really is un-skateable in case they fall down," said rink manager Rocky Kelly.
The Clinton Square ice skating rink will be open until March 18th - weather permitting.
