SULLIVAN, MADISON CO. -- A hunter was in critical condition following a shooting Sunday morning but was upgraded to serious condition late Sunday night.

Madison County 911 received the call just after 10:00 Sunday morning. Deputies say 61-year-old Douglas Brownell Sr. of Kirkville was shot in the upper leg while hunting with his son and a friend off Bolivar Road in the Town of Sullivan.

Authorities say 34-year-old Douglas Brownell Jr. thought he hit a deer in the woods, but instead shot his dad with a rifle.

Brownell Sr. was taken to Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse for treatment of his injury.

Douglas Brownell Jr. was charged with reckless endangerment in the second degree on Monday afternoon. He will answer to his charges in the Town of Sullivan Court at a later date.
