SYRACUSE -- The Syracuse Common Council’s Neighborhood Preservation Committee met Thursday at City Hall to discuss snow removal on sidewalks in the city.

The committee looked specifically at how to better enforce the 24 hour cleanup regulation.

About a dozen people showed up to the meeting including people with disabilioties to talk about the challenges they face when sidewalks are not clear.

The new ordinance on the table would expand enforcement of the rule forcing property owners to keep their sidewalks clear of snow.  It would allow code enforcement officers to issue citations for violations.

If the citations are not responded to a property owner could face a 50 dollar fine.

Several questions were brought up at today's meeting including what would happen if someone is physically unable to clear a sidewalk. Those questions will be investigated further and the full Common Council will review the issue at Monday's work session and meeting.
