SENECA COUNTY -- If you live in Seneca County, be careful the next time your phone rings.

Seneca County Sheriff's deputies are warning people about a phone scam that's going on.

Folks in the county are getting calls from people asking them to send money via Western Union to a family member in some form of distress. The callers have even had correct names of a family member.

The caller asks the intended victim send an unspecified amount of money to Lima, Peru to get the distressed family member back home due to an accident or other hardship issue.

Deputies say the phone scam is targeting older adults who might think the call is legitimate.

Investigators want you to be cautious of these phone calls and double check with other family members about the loved one mentioned by the caller before sending any money.

If you have concerns about a call you've received, contact your local law enforcement agency. You can also report a scam or see information about ongoing scams by clicking here.
