SYRACUSE -- A Syracuse man is recovering after his home caught fire early Tuesday morning.
According to Syracuse Fire Department Deputy Chief Jeff Daly, around 4:21 a.m. a call went out for a fire at 103 Cossitt Street in Syracuse, near Valley Drive. He says a 37-year-old man was home when the fire started, awoke to the smell of smoke, discovered the fire, and attempted to put it out by himself. The resident was unsuccessful and was overcome by smoke, but was able to escape the house and call 911 for help shortly thereafter.
Fire crews arrived on the scene and were able to put out the fire in about ten minutes. Daly says the building suffered ‘significant damage’ to the living and dining rooms in the back of the house, and heavy smoke damage to the rest of the house.
The resident, whose name has not been released, was taken to a local hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation.
The fire is still under investigation, and the cause has not yet been determined.
