SYRACUSE -- The Mayor of Syracuse has issued a veto rejecting the common council's plan to change the city charter to accommodate new development in Eastwood.

The veto comes after the last council meeting of the year. At the last council meeting the vote was 6-3 which councilors said would be enough to override a mayoral veto. Right now its not clear if the lawmakers will be able to override the mayor's decision.

The charter change would have allowed councilors more power to go around the city planning commission, which councilors blame for holding up the plan to re-develop an eyesore section of Eastwood. One plan would see a Kinney Drugs built on the site of an old bowling alley - and transform the crumbling old Steak and Sundae building.

The mayor says changing the charter would inject politics into the planning process.
