SYRACUSE (AP) -- A house in Syracuse built by Habitat for Humanity for a disabled veteran has sustained thousands of dollars in damage from thieves looking for copper pipes.

Habitat for Humanity Executive Director Suzanne Williams tells WSYR-TV that the veteran was due to move into the house in January so he could be closer to the Syracuse Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

But thieves recently broke into the house and tore out some walls while seeking copper piping. Officials say the thieves caused as much as $10,000 in damage.

The home's plumbing was built with polyethylene piping, so the thieves got away with only about $100 worth of copper used in heating devices.

Habitat for Humanity says the damage will be repaired and the veteran will eventually move in.
