Reports of erratic driving and several efforts to stop a car on Saturday morning ended, when the driver went off 481 South in DeWitt near Route 298, just after 10:30am.
State Police say they got the first reports of erratic driving, on 481 near Great Northern Mall, and were never able to catch up to the car, however several other motorists attempted to slow her down or edge her off the road, but were unsuccessful. The woman drove off 481 Southbound on a curve near the 298 interchange, skidded some 100 feet sideways, then flipped several times--our photographer Andy Perdue, at the scene, says at least 5 times. Several motorists stopped to help and emergency crews were on standby, but the driver was talking to State Police at the scene. A trooper rode in the ambulance with her, to University Hospital.
Troopers say weather conditions were not a factor. A towtruck pulled the wrecked car, full of luggage, back onto the road. Investigation into the crash continues.
