(AP) -- ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) - The New York Thruway Authority plans to offer free coffee and tea to travelers at its rest stops from late Saturday through early Sunday.

The giveaway is a 41-year tradition on the highway system, intended to help motorists stay awake over the New Year's holiday. The authority says free caffeinated beverages will be served from 11 p.m. until 7 a.m. at each of the 27 travel plazas along the toll road that stretches across the state.

Participating vendors are McDonald's Corp., Delaware North Companies Travel Hospitality Services, and HMS Host Corp.

The authority is also reminding motorists not to stop along the shoulder of the highway unless it is an actual emergency.
