ROME -- The Rome Fire Department confirms a show horse with an estimated value of $20,000 was killed in a raging inferno.

A CNY Central facebook friend took incredible photographs of a barn fire in progress in Rome Monday evening. Patsy McCarthy is credited with taking photos of the blaze at 8471 Elmer Hill Road near Lake Delta. She wrote on Facebook that she was in the area when, "this girl came running down the road that said her horse was in there... I lost it and she fell to the ground.... Tears ,tears, and more tears.. Prayers to the people who had a life in there....... "

The Utica Observer Dispatch newspaper reports one fire official said it was an old barn. The paper reports it could not be learned if there were any animals in the barn or any other property.

One neighbor told the paper he believes the owner was leasing the barn to someone who was caring for a sick horse.
