NEW YORK -- Consumers across New York felt more confident during the holiday season.
According to a new poll by the Siena College Research Institute (SRI), consumer confidence climbed 5.1 points in December, while the nation's confidence increased 5.8 points.
Last month, more people planned to buy computers and do major home improvements. However, fewer people planned to buy cars and trucks, furniture and homes. And while researchers say the sense of optimism outweighs pessimism these days, there's still a long way to go.
"Confidence took a healthy step forward as 2011 ended in both the Empire State and the nation," according to Dr. Don Levy, SRI's Director. "While New Yorkers may feel better than they did a few months ago, they remain hesitant to make major purchases as buying plans for cars, computers, homes and home improvements show little change and are now lower than at this time last year."
Despite some relief in prices at the pump, there still appears to be concern over gasoline prices. In fact, 59 percent of all New Yorkers say the current gas prices are having a very serious or somewhat serious impact on their financial condition.
Grocery bills still seem to be a hardship for 71 percent of people surveyed.
