BINGHAMTON (AP) -- Authorities have charged a 22-year-old man in the New Year's Day slaying of a former schoolmate whose body was found in a creek bed outside Binghamton.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder says Thursday that Alan Outman of Johnson City has been charged with second-degree murder in the slaying of 21-year-old David Fillers of Dickinson.

Harder says Fillers was staying with friends at a downtown Binghamton hotel on New Year's Eve but got separated from them. Investigators say both men ended up at the same motel in nearby Vestal, where Filler's body was found Monday morning.

Police haven't provided a motive for the killing, believed to have occurred early Sunday morning.

Outman was held in the Broome County Jail. Authorities didn't immediately know if he had a lawyer.
