Be careful what you cut, when you're dieting!
If you're trying to lose weight, make sure you're losing the right kind. That's the conclusion of a study in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) that is particularly timely, given all the New Year's diet resolutions.
The study concludes that to lose weight, cut your calories, but if you try a low proteing diet, you could lose a too-large portion of lean body mass--muscle. Dr. Rich O'Neil, psychologist at SUNY Upstate, says that is actually dangerous to your overall health, and that diests should include 15% of calories from protein.
And, O'Neillit's also important to get enough sleep, otherwise you'll feel hungrier, eat more, and store more calories as fat while losing lean body mass.
