WINDSOR, NY (AP) -- Two Binghamton men are dead after falling through thin ice while they were fishing on a Broome County lake.

WBNG reports that emergency crews pulled the men from White Birch Lake in Windsor Saturday evening and took them to a hospital, but they later died.

Broome County Sheriff David Harder identified the men as 31-year-old Mike Katchuk and 55-year-old Stanley Wayman.

A local resident tried to throw a rope to the men as they struggled in the frigid water, but they were too far from shore. The sheriff says deputies responded within five minutes and one of the men was still above water, but he soon went under.

Harder says after a few warm days, the ice on White Birch Lake was only an inch thick.
