SYRACUSE -- The Clay man who admits he was 'huffing' shortly before a crash that killed a 19-year-old apologized in court Monday morning.
20-year-old Aaron Sakran, was sentenced in Onondaga County Court to a minimum of 2 1/3 years to a maximum of 7 years behind bars for the death of 19-year-old Joseph Ozimek III.
Sakran, an Onondaga Community College student, previously pleaded guilty to felony manslaughter in Ozimek's death. Sakran admits he inhaled fumes from an aerosol can of keyboard cleaner shortly before hitting Ozimek and then driving off.
In court, Sakran said he accepts full responsibility for his actions. "I deserve everything I am going to go through. I am truly sorry," Sakran said.
Ozimek, a senior at Liverpool High School, was walking home from his job at McDonalds when he was killed.
Ozimek's body was thrown several feet and his shoes were found nearby. A Centro bus driver discovered the teen's body lying on the side of the road.
Deputies say was driving with a suspended license. After the crash, Sakran said he didn't realize he hit a person until his father saw damage to the car and told him of news reports about the accident.
