SYRACUSE -- A New York senator is pushing an effort to bring high-tech manufacturing to Syracuse.

Senator Charles Schumer (D, New York) is urging the Department of Defense (DOD) to build the first-ever high-tech nanochip manufacturing plant locally. Schumer wants the DOD to partner with the SUNY Albany College for Nanoscale Science and Engineering (CNSE) and APIC, a DOD contractor, to bring the plant to Syracuse by the end of this year.

APIC is a California-based company that manufactures high-tech nanochips. The company is looking for a place to produce the next generation of nanotechnology chips using cutting-edge photonics technology. Schumer says Syracuse is their target location.

The plant would be located in a building at Electronics Park, which is being renovated by Centerstate CEO. "Micro-chip manufacturing is set to explode across upstate New York and this is Syracuse's opportunity to get in the game and establish a new, job-creating high-tech industry right in Central New York," Schumer said.

"All of the pieces are in place - a new facility, a manufacturer that needs a home, and a world-class partner in CNSE - all we need is for the Navy to step up to the plate and partner with CNSE to bring these jobs and this work to Syracuse and upstate."

Schumer says nanotechnology chip manufacturing is already boosting the economy in the Capital Region economy, and it has the potential to do the same thing for Syracuse. Landing this plant here, he says, would bring new high-tech jobs to Syracuse.

APIC says approximately 200 jobs could be created at the Syracuse plant in just a few years, with the potential for many more jobs in Albany and Rochester.
