SYRACUSE -- Volunteers in Syracuse are marking Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with service.
Dozens of people at Teamsters 317 on Spencer Street in Syracuse helped get clothes to families in need Monday. They worked on folding clothes and packing boxes. Volunteers say they are honoring the words of Dr. King.
"A day off is not a day off," says United Way volunteer Helen Hudson, "so we aren't taking a day off. We are coming together as a community to help community members who are in need or transition right now."
The events organizers say need continues to grow in Syracuse. In fact, they say it is 50% higher this year.
Donations collected Monday will be delivered to area shelters and handed out to about 600 families. Many of them need clothes for a new start.
"You never know what position people are in," says volunteer Brandon Haye, "When you see them receiving those clothes, it's a humbling and wonderful experience."
