A strong cold front moved through Central New York late Tuesday night, prompting the issuance of High Wind Warnings by the National Weather Service across most of the viewing area. Winds gusted as high as 62 mph at the Syracuse Hancock Airport, which is similar to that of a Tropical Storm. A gust of 105 mph was recorded on top of the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, which is equivalent to a category two hurricane on the Saffir Simpson scale! In Memphis, NY, about a 25 minute drive from downtown Syracuse, large trees were uprooted due to the strong winds. On Morgan Rd., right along the Seneca River, a large, 3 foot wide tree was uprooted. The tree crashed through a fence, and smashed a back deck.
Neighbor Denise Ryan said “it sounded like a Mac truck.” Ryan, who’s lived there for nearly her whole life, said the tree has stood there longer than her, and it “felt like something was going to run her over” as it crashed to the ground.
For Ryan, it was easily the strongest winds she’s ever experienced.
