An ancient natural remedy is making a comeback in the world of medicine and you will probably find it in your kitchen cabinet.
It turns out honey can help with the common cold. And studies find that for young children, it may be more effective than over-the-counter cough medicine.
Victoria Mata hesitates to give her children cough and cold medicines. Instead she gives her daughter honey. "I'm not really a fan of the medicine because my doctor told me about all the side effects," Mata said.
Dr. Tony Pietriniro, a pediatrician, agrees parents should give natural remedies whenever possible. "Children can become dazed and unresponsive to their parents when using cough medicine," Dr. Pietriniro said.
He recommends honey, specifically buckwheat honey to calm colds. "In some cases it has proven more effective than cough medicine in children under six years old," Dr. Pietriniro said. He says parents should give their little ones about a half-teaspoon two to three times a day, but never to children younger than one-year-old because it could cause botulism.
Among the other benefits, Dr. Pietriniro says, are honey's ability help heal wounds and potential ability to help relieve allergies.
