ALBANY (AP) -- Sheriff's from across New York are gathering in the Albany area, where they're voicing their support for Gov. Cuomo's proposal to expand the state's DNA databank.

The New York State Sheriff's Association is holding its annual training conference this week at a suburban Albany hotel. The organization is holding a news conference Wednesday afternoon to push for the statewide DNA databank to include all misdemeanor convictions under the penal code, plus all felony convictions under other statutes such as traffic and business laws.

Cuomo has said such a move will put New York "on the cutting edge of criminal justice."

Forty-five county sheriffs are attending the conference, which runs through Friday. New York's top-ranking state law enforcement officials are speaking at the gathering.
