SYRACUSE -- Syracuse patients now have a new place to go for an emergency.
At 3 a.m. Wednesday, the emergency department at St. Joseph’s Hospital opened to the public.
Expanding the emergency department is the first phase in an $80-million project.
The emergency room now has more than 50 new beds. There's also a chest pain center, a psychiatric emergency center and a green data center.
That's important for employees here who said going green and reducing their environmental impact is key.
The second phase of the project will include more than 100 new private patient rooms and a state-of-the-art surgical suite with 14 operating rooms.
The second phase of the expansion is not expected to be finished until 2014.
