SYRACUSE -- A big milestone was reached Friday in the Ronald McDonald House project in Syracuse.
The roof is now being put on on the house which is being built on East Genesee Street at the corner of University Place. The $6 million project has been in the works for years and is half way completed. Families with ill children stay there while their kids are in the hospital.
The new facility will have the capacity for 39 guest rooms with private baths, a large family centered kitchen, a private guest registration area and a community room.
"It's really important for the families who come to us that they have space they can call their own," said Beth Trunfio, executive director of the Ronald McDonald House of CNY.
The new building will also be 100 percent handicapped accessible. The Ronald McDonald House charity still needs to raise just over $500,000 more for the project.
"We've had incredible broad based support the the project," Trunfio said. "Folks have given significant six figure dollar amounts down to $25 from a bake sale."
Ground was broken last June on the new house which has been years in the making. Supporters have had to overcome several obstacles, including a lengthy fight over demolishing the building that was torn down to make way for the one being built.
