SYRACUSE -- A man shot by Syracuse Police has been declared not competent to stand trial.
Onondaga County Court Judge Donald Todd made the ruling Wednesday morning. Two doctors evaluated Ralph Ash and determined he is not fit for trial.
Ash is accused of threatening police officers last December. Officers were called to the 600 block of Catherine Street on the northside for a report of an emotionally disturbed man. Ash was there with a weapon used in martial arts training. Officers tried to talk with him, but he continued to threaten them. Officers eventually fired their guns.
Ash will be committed to a secure psychiatric facility for 90 days to see if medication can stabilize him. He is due back in court in May.
Ash is charged with illegally possessing a weapon.
A grand jury determined the officers were justified in the shooting.
