CANTON -- A major fire erupted on the SUNY-Canton campus Friday shortly before noon.

According to WWNYTV, it started in a chemical lab at one of the buildings, Cook Hall, and tore through several rooms. According to the SUNY-Canton website, Cook Hall houses science, health and justice programs.

Officials are trying to determine the cause of a fire at a state college building in northern New York campus, forcing part of the campus to be evacuated.

No injuries were reported, but officials say adjacent buildings were evacuated because of concerns about the billowing smoke.

Firefighters were close to controlling the blaze within two hours. Witnesses say haz-mat teams were on the campus.
