Testimony is now finished in the David Trebilcock trial after an emotionally charged week.
Trebilcock is accused of stabbing and killing 6-year-old Lauren Belius last July. Lauren was the daughter of his girlfriend.
Trebilcock's defense attorney is arguing he is not guilty by reason of mental disease and defect.
On Friday, the defense called its final witness, Dr. Lawrence Farago. Farago is a psychiatrist with the CNY Psychiatric Center.
Farago testified he was originally hired by the District Attorney's office, but after issuing his findings, he was retained by the Public Defender's office instead.
Farago says he believes Trebilcock is suffering from schizophrenia, paranoid type. He also says he believes Trebilcock is suffering from a thought disorder, and that can't be faked. He testified Trebilcock's prognosis is poor, and he is "dangerously mentally ill."
Farago testified he believes, at the time of Lauren's death, Trebilcock did not know what he was doing was wrong.
Witnesses for the prosecution have previously testified that Trebilcock appeared coherent and lucid after Lauren's death, and he knew he would likely go to jail for what he did.
On Tuesday, the defense and prosecution are scheduled to present their closing arguments. Then, because this is a bench trial and there is no jury, the judge will make his ruling.
