NEW YORK (AP) -- Mayor Michael Bloomberg has again strongly defended New York City's ban on worship services in public schools.
The ban went in effect on Sunday.
Asked on Monday whether he'd consider a compromise, Bloomberg told The New York Times that the Constitution is clear on the issue.
He says one of the greatest things about America is the separation of church and state.
The ban affects mostly small Christian groups without their own buildings. It was prompted by the U.S. Supreme Court's refusal in December to consider an appeal of the city's ban on worship services in schools. The city policy was upheld by a federal appeals court.
Church advocates plan to seek an "11th-hour" injunction against the city on Tuesday.
