HERKIMER COUNTY -- For the past 15 years, John Sapienza has been missing. The government considers Sapienza to be dead, but no one knows what happened to him.
According to the Utica Observer-Dispatch, police are still wondering what happened to Sapienza back in 1997.
Herkimer-based state police investigator Timothy Blaise told the Utica Observer-Dispatch that he doesn’t think people just disappear unless there’s foul play. He hopes the public can help provide answers in this case.
Sapienza’s daughter and wife have different opinions about what may have happened. His daughter Teresa told the Utica OD that she thinks Sapienza was killed, but his wife Charlene just says Sapienza disappeared after their relationship went downhill.
The Utica OD says investigators don’t know if Sapienza is alive or dead. The only clue left behind was his car which was found in a parking lot about a month after he was last seen.
But, the story gets even stranger. Investigators told the Utica OD that someone gave the Social Security Administration a death certificate that shows Sapienza having died on April 15, 1998, but there’s no record of who provided the certificate.
What investigators do know is that Sapienza’s wife filled a power of a attorney document that gave her control of her husband’s finances just five days before Sapienza’s car was found.
