EATON, MADISON CO. -- Two female SUNY Morrisville students were hurt in a car crash in Eaton this morning, one of them critically.
It happened shortly before 8 a.m. on Swamp Road just north of the Village of Morrisville.
Madison County Sheriff's deputies say the driver of a pickup truck was heading northbound when she lost control, crashing into several trees.
A deputy who was just coming on duty was the first on the scene. He climbed onto the back of the pickup truck, crawled into the cab through the back window and provided emergency care to the pinned victim until EMS personnel arrived on the scene.
The driver was pinned and had to be extricated from the car, which took nearly 40 minutes due to the heavy damage. She suffered critical injuries and was airlifted to Upstate University Hospital.
The passenger was able to get free from the wreckage and was taken to St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Utica with non-life threatening injuries.
Swamp Road was shut down between Fearon Road and the Village of Morrisville for more than an hour.
The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
