Man killed at vintage snowmobile races in Gouverneur

GOUVERNEUR -- A fatal snowmobile accident that happened at the Gouverneur-St. Lawrence County Fairgrounds is under investigation.

Around 3:15 p.m. Friday, police say a snowmobile driven by 53-year-old Donald Theriault of Canada, was entering the inside curve of the track at a high speed and hit a hay bale which was being used as a barrier on the inside of the track. The impact threw him into a hay bale used as a barrier on the outside of the track. Police say a snowmobile driven by 47-year-old John Altman III of Fulton was driving behind Theriault was was unable to avoid colliding with Theriault's sled. Altman was thrown.

Theriault was taken to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Altman was also taken to the hospital for his injuries.
