UTICA -- Utica police are investigating a rash of car break-ins.

They've happened between February 19 and February 25 on Hart Street, State Street, Genesee Street, Lansing Street, Shaw Street, Roosevelt Drive and Springate Street.

Police say the thieves are breaking into both locked and unlocked cars.

In several instances, the suspects smashed windows, stealing cell phones, laptop computers, iPod touch devices, GPS units and purses.

Police say most of the items were left inside locked cars and were visible through the windows. Many of the cars had their side windows smashed out.

Utica police say the Pratt Institute/Munson Williams area and the surrounding side streets is a new area of concern.

Utica police want to remind people to keep their cars locked and leave nothing valuable inside.
