LAKE PLACID (AP) -- An Adirondack backcountry skier who runs a website on the sport says skiers followed proper protocol and nobody was hurt in an avalanche on a new slide in the high peaks near Lake Placid.
Drew Haas, owner of the Adirondack Backcountry Skiing website, posted a report on the Saturday afternoon avalanche on Wright Peak.
Numerous new slides were created on Adirondack peaks by Hurricane Irene. The bare rock slopes are a popular destination for climbers and backcountry skiers.
The Adirondack Daily Enterprise reports that two skiers were present when the avalanche occurred. Both were trained in avalanche safety.
The only known fatal avalanche in the Adirondacks was in February 2000 on the Angel Slide created by Tropical Storm Floyd.
