SYRACUSE -- In a new plea to her supporters, Congresswoman Ann Marie Buerkle (R-Onondaga) says there is an effort underway to shift the 25th Congressional district in a way that would, "allow a liberal Democrat to waltz into Congress."
In a new online donation letter, Buerkle writes to her supporters that a liberal victory would undo the progress she has helped to make in the last two years.
The recent redistricting maps drawn up by both Democrats and Republicans appear to share one thing in common. They both alter the 25th Congressional district in a way that would make it harder for Buerkle to win. The new maps make Syracuse and Ithaca the population centers of the district, and take away the rual area outside Rochester, where Buerkle had tremendous support two years ago.
In her letter to supporters, Buerkle braces them for a tough fight ahead.
"The Washington liberals are already bragging that they will spend significant resources to try and defeat me. You can help stop them by making an immediate contribution of $1,000, $500 , $100 -- or whatever you can afford to help us prepare for the campaign ahead," she wrote.
Buerkle already faces a challenger in former Congressman Democrat Dan Maffei, she may also face a Republican primary challenge from Robert Paul Spencer.
