Fish need to be moved from Carpenter's Brook
Less than a month til the season opener, Carpenter's Brook needs help stocking streams
With trout fishing season almost here, the Carpenter's Brook Fish Hatchery is putting out a call for volunteers to help stock fish in area ponds and streams.
Judy Talbot, who oversees the operation for Onondaga County Parks, says 70,000 fish have to be moved out of the ponds where they've grown up.
Most are first year fish, but some of the second year fish are more than a foot long, already.
The brown, brook and rainbow trout have to be netted and put into containers, and carried to the 'stocking trucks' to be transported to their new homes.
Experience is not required, but volunteers need to be over 18, and able to handle a large net, and carry the pails full of fish, up to 50 lbs. A full day's volunteering is required.
They'll work, rain or shine, March 20 through May 16 on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays, 8:30am - 4pm. Carpenter's Brook has more details at 689-9367 or www.OnondagaCountyParks.com
