ALBANY (AP) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo says the state is commissioning a $500,000 study to help retain military bases across New York as the Department of Defense looks to close sites to cut costs.

Cuomo says the economic impact study will explore growth opportunities and strategies to keep New York bases open.

The study will include hiring a military affairs expert.

Cuomo says bases account for more than 10,000 jobs for New York and have a $1.9 billion economic impact on the state.

Key installations in New York are in Niagara Falls, Watertown, Rome, Scotia, Syracuse, Watervliet, West Point, Brooklyn, Newburgh and Westhampton.
