SYRACUSE --
The Rescue Mission unveiled a new district in Syracuse in honor of its 125th anniversary.
The new district encompasses the Rescue Mission’s campus outlines by Onondaga Creek to the east, Granger Street to the west, Dickerson Street to the north, and Gifford Street to the south.
The Rescue Mission will celebrate its 125th anniversary with events throughout the year that will honor volunteers and aim to educate the public about homelessness.
"It is truly a testament to our amazing volunteers and staff that the Rescue Mission is able to help so many individuals. We feel blessed to have come this far in 125 years and look forward to continuing our mission by changing more lives in the years to come," says the Rescue Mission’s executive director Chasz Parker.
The Rescue Mission was founded in 1887 and began as an outreach program to Erie Canal workers.
The year long celebration kicks off March 21 with "Meals with a Mission" where several local restaurants will donate up to $2 for each customer served that day. On May 18, the Rescue Mission will hose a movie night at the Palace Theater to thank its volunteers and employees. The event is open to the public.
