NEWFIELD, TOMPKINS COUNTY -- Three people are dead in Tompkins County after their pick-up truck veered off a roadway and ended up in a pond.

It happened Sunday morning around 1:45 in the area of Connecticut Hill Road and Boyland Road in the Town of Newfield. That is near the Connecticut Hill State Wildlife Game Management Area.

The three were driving westbound when the truck left the road, hit a stone barrier, and rolled over onto its roof into a pond, according to Tompkins County Sheriff's Deputies.

The driver, Christopher Bamforth, 47, and Stefanie Knowlton, 44, were transported to the Cayuga Medical Center and were later pronounced dead, according to deputies.

Casey Casterline, 40, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Deputies say they don't know what caused the crash.
