DEWITT -- About fifty people showed up to a public hearing about the Jamesville-Dewitt High School budget Monday night.

The proposed budget is a little over $47.8 million; about a 1% decrease from last year, but does not include any teacher cuts.

Superintendent Alice Kendrick calls it a "status quo" budget, with no major cuts and no major spending in any department.

Board of Education members say they still don't know what the tax levy increase will be on this budget.

Several people asked the school board to re-instate an elementary school librarian position that was eliminated after a librarian left the district.

Another big issue was athletics. The thirteen coaching positions that were eliminated last year were not reinstated. Parents have been raising money to save the modified sports program, but they say they need the district's help.

There was an emotional appeal from the father of an autistic student, who says sports changed his son's life.

The board will vote to adopt a budget on April 2. The public will vote on May 15.
