LIVERPOOL -- Two-time U.S. Olympian and utility damage survivor Cliff Meidl spoke about safe digging at Dig Safely New York's 2012 Excavator Seminar in Liverpool Thursday.
Meidl partnered with Dig Safely New York to speak about the importance of making a free call to 811 before digging.
When Meidl was 20, he hit three unmarked high-voltage electrical cables while using a jackhammer. The accident injured both of his knees.
After his accident, Meidl managed to recover after tireless training and went on to compete in the 1996 and 2000 Summer Olympics in the sport of kayaking.
Meidl’s peers chose him to be the U.S. flag bearer in Sydney in 2000.
Dig Safely New York describes itself as, "a one-call notification center that informs member utility owners of a home owner's or contractor's digging plans."
By sharing his story, Meidl’s hopes to bring attention to dangers of digging this construction season.
