WEST MONROE -- After two serious crashes at the same intersection in just two days, bikers are raising awareness for motorcycle safety.
Thursday night, about a hundred bikers gathered at the corner of Route 49 and Whig Hill Road in West Monroe. Sunday, two people were killed there in a motorcycle crash, the next day there was another serious bike accident.
Now, a sign sits on the corner reminding drivers to look twice. Bikers say that second glance could save a life.
"We are dying to be seen. We want to save a life, and save someone from taking a life," said Carmella Brown.
Brown says they all realize that crashes are accidents, but say they can be avoided if drivers and bikers are both more careful on the roads.
"It's crazy. I guess in the past there have been a lot of accidents here, but two motorcycles - it really shook things up," said biker Jeffery Wheelock.
The warm temperatures have brought an early start to the motorcycle season. Bikers say in the past two weeks in New York, there have already been seven deadly crashes - tragedies they're hoping provide a wake-up call for all drivers to share the road.
They are also taking their message to lawmakers in Albany. They recently met with State Senator Patty Richie and are hoping the solar-powered signs on the highway can display reminders for drivers to be aware of bikes.
