NEW YORK (AP) -- New York City Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott says he wants to crack down on social media contact between teachers and students.

Chancellor Dennis Walcott says a social media policy could be in place by next month.

He told reporters on Thursday that it's important for educators to be conscious that they are staff and working on behalf of students.

He said teachers who friend students via Facebook and other sites do not want to find themselves in a situation that could either compromise them or be misinterpreted.

Thursday's announcement follows a rash of alleged misconduct incidents in city schools. At least 15 Department of Education employees have been arrested this year.
