OSWEGO (AP) -- Authorities in upstate New York say the number of brush fires set by an arsonist now stands at 30.

Cayuga County Sheriff David Gould tells WSYR-TV the most recent were Monday at a time there were warnings across the state that high winds and dry weather raised a serious risk of brush and forest fires.

Police say the fires believed to have been set the same way have been reported in Cayuga, Tompkins, Wayne and Ontario counties over the past several weeks.

They say that while the fires have been small, they have the potential of getting out of control, threatening nearby structures and firefighters.

People are being asked to watch for anyone acting suspiciously along roadsides or throwing things into grassy areas.
