OSWEGO --

The Oswego City Police Department says student transportation safety is a priority and it will be increasing efforts to enforce stopping school buses.

Police want to remind drivers that it is illegal to pass a stopped school bus with flashing red lights no matter which way you are approaching the bus. Police say illegally passing a school bus is a $250 to $400 fine and the possibility of 5 points on your license for a first offense.

The police department is participating in Operation Safe Stop Education and Enforcement Day on Wednesday, April 18, 2012.

The program aims to promote school bus safety through enforcement and education. It is supported by a number of organizations across New York including the New York State Education Department.
